Welcome to the

Yonkers Family Literacy Alliance!

Dear Colleagues:

Welcome to the Yonkers Family Literacy Alliance website!  Thanks to a two-year grant from the New York State Council on Children and Families, Yonkers and ten other communities throughout the state are creating comprehensive alliances of local agencies to better inform and serve individuals and families in need of literacy and language programs.

The Yonkers Family Literacy Alliance website is specifically designed to assist front-line staff of Yonkers educational, health, and social service agencies to learn about and select from the vast array of family literacy programs and services in our City.

We hope that you will consult this site frequently as you strive to serve families seeking your help.

Each of the agencies listed in the website has been surveyed by FIRST – Family Information and Referral Service Teams, Inc., which will continue to provide regular updates of agency information, keeping our website fresh and helpful to you.

We extend our thanks to the many representatives of Yonkers-based agencies who have helped advise and guide us as the project developed and the website finally became a reality.

(The directory is also available in print form.  For more information, please contact Judith Schavrien of the Yonkers Public Library at (914) 337-1500.)

How do I use the Family Literacy Database?

The opening screen for the database is divided into 3 sections:

  1. Information About You:  This section records statistical data.  Entering a city and/or zip code will narrow your search results to agencies that provide services to that city and/or zip code.  All other data is for statistical purposes only and will therefore not limit your search results.  You do not need to enter any information in this section in order to search the database.
  2. Search by Category:  Allows you to search using categories to help you find a service that is closest to your area of interest.
  3. Search with Word:  Allows you to search using keywords.

Searching the Database

There are two ways in which you can choose to search:

  1. Search by Category:  on the left side of the screen, a list of categories is displayed.  Click on a category.  A list of subcategories and the specific services associated with them will then be displayed.  Click on the service that is closest to your area of interest.  A list of providers who offer this service will be displayed.
  2. Search with Words:  On the right side of the screen, there are two buttons and a text box that allows you to type in keywords for a search.  To narrow your search, use more keywords.  To widen your search, use less keywords.

a.         “Services in the Community” – allows you to search by services offered.  Type in your keywords and click “Go”.  A list of service terms related to your keywords will be displayed.  Click on the service that is closest to your area of interest.  A list of providers who offer this service will be displayed.

b.        “Agencies/Programs in the Community” – allows you to search by agency or program name.  Type in your keywords and click “Go”.  A list of agencies and programs with those keywords in their name will be listed.

Once your list of agencies is displayed for the service you selected, you may click on any agency name to obtain more detailed information about that agency and service.  If a street address is listed for that agency, you can obtain a street map by selecting the “Get Directions” button across the top of the screen (this feature will not work for a Post Office Box).  If the agency has a website, a link will be displayed under the agency’s address.
