Literacy Volunteers of Westchester County
Literacy Volunteers of Westchester County, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing student-centered English literacy services and ESL classes to adults in Westchester County, free of charge. ProgramsLVWRC offers free, confidential one-on-one and small group tutoring in basic literacy for adults, as well as classroom and on-site vocational English instruction and citizenship courses for speakers of Spanish, Haitian Creole, Yiddish/Hebrew, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Arabic, Korean and Japanese, among others. Basic LiteracyFor adults 16 years of age and older who are no longer attending school and want to increase their literacy skills, Literacy Volunteers of Westchester/Rockland provides free, one-to-one, confidential tutoring. Students are matched with a properly trained and certified volunteer tutor. Students and tutors work together to define the student’s goals and they design lesson plans that help accomplish those goals. Tutors meet with students at a mutually agreed upon time and place, usually a local library, church or school. Meetings are held once a week and last 1–2 hours. ![]() English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)This program is for adults who are new speakers of English and are interested in improving their conversational speaking, listening and reading skills. Literacy Volunteers of Westchester/Rockland Counties provides free, one-to-one tutoring. Whenever possible, students are matched with a tutor who speaks their language. Students and tutors work together to define the student’s goals and they design lesson plans that help accomplish those goals. Tutors meet with students at a mutually agreed upon time and place, usually a local library, church or school. Meetings are held once a week and last 1–2 hours. ![]() Computer LiteracyAt the Yonkers Learning Center, LVWRC provides access to a small computer learning lab with ESOL and basic literacy software for students to enhance their one-on-one and small group learning experiences. Students already working with a tutor or enrolled in the classes are afforded this opportunity. The computer lab is available by appointment. Citizenship ClassesLVWRC offers free classes for adults who are eligible to become United States citizens. Our program is designed to help the citizenship applicant through the entire application process, as well as preparing the student to pass the U.S. Citizenship exam. Preparation for the interview is included in the citizenship class. Practice is provided in written dictation and in answering questions for the oral interview. Services are offered to speakers of:
