Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program?
The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler. The goal is to have read 1,000 books (yes, you can repeat books) before your precious one starts kindergarten. Does it sound hard? Not really if you think about it. If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years. If you consider that most children start kindergarten at around 5 years of age, you have more time than you think.

Who can participate in this program?
Any child who has not yet entered kindergarten.

Can you really expect to read 1,000 books to your child before kindergarten?
Yes! Completion will take from a few months to a few years, depending on how often you read.

What books count?
Any time your child listens to a whole book it counts! It can be a library book, a book from home, a book read at storytime, even an audiobook or e-book. You can even count multiple readings of the same book. Multiple readings help to develop language skills.

How do I register my child?
It’s simple!

  1. Sign up online using our Read2Squared App or in person in the Children’s Room of your preferred YPL location.
  2. Mark off or color the circle on your 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Reading Log. If you read a book more than once, you can record it each time. Books read at storytime, at daycare, or by others to your child also count!
  3. When you finish 100 books, bring your sheet to the library and:
  4. Repeat steps 2-4 until you’ve read 1000 books!
  5. Once you’ve finished reading 1000 books come in and claim your prize!

Ready to Read
You are your child’s first teacher, and your home is where your child begins to learn. When you talk, sing, read, write, and play you are helping your child get ready to read!

Children who are read to at an early age will:

  • be better prepared to learn to read
  • have heard more than 30 million words by age three
  • have a significantly larger vocabulary by age six, dramatically impacting reading success
  • score higher on reading, math, and general knowledge tests

Is there an app?
Yes! You can sign up for the Read2Squared App in the Apple Store or Google Play Store. You will be able to sign up your child, and log and track your progress. Remember that for every 100 books, you should come into the library to move your “turtle” forward.
