Legal Resources in Westchester County

Last updated: May 5, 2020

Last week, the New York State court system continued to expand the operations of its virtual courts beyond the limited category of essential and emergency matters, allowing certain pending “nonessential” proceedings to be heard by video or telephone. Nevertheless, the existing prohibition on the filing of new, nonessential matters, or filing of papers by parties in pending nonessential matters, will continue. (For the most current information on the courts, check their Web site.)

This does not mean that the need for legal aid during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic has diminished; if anything, it is even more pressing. While their physical offices may be closed, most legal assistance organizations remain committed to serving their clients through this health emergency. The Pace Women’s Justice Center (PWJC), for instance, remains fully operational, albeit remotely; and while they cannot accommodate walk-in consultations, they have two phone numbers you can call for legal guidance: 914-287-0739 and 914-422-4188. Attorneys are there to provide assistance with a variety of legal issues, from safety, Orders of Protection, custody, visitation, support, and divorce; to wills, Powers of Attorney, health-care proxies, and immigration. And if you feel that you have been the victim of a COVID-19 scam, or you are feeling unsafe at home because others are not abiding by social distancing rules—especially if you are over 60—they can help. The PWJC has also put together this directory of other legal and mental health resources in Westchester.
