Librarian Trainee

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is a preprofessional position involving responsibility for learning library procedures, techniques, and skills under professional guidance. As the trainee progresses in professional ability and skills, he/she may be assigned increasingly professional responsibilities and some supervisory responsibilities over the work of nonprofessionals. Pursues a graduate program leading to a Master's Degree. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Learns and assists in:

  • Library informational, reference, and referral services;
  • Advisory and guidance services;
  • Cataloging and classification of library materials;
  • Compiling book lists;
  • Preparing library exhibits and displays;
  • Conducting book talks, multimedia programs, story and picture book hours,
  • and liaison activities with community groups;
  • Supervising of library pages and other nonprofessional personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from a four year college or university recognized by the University of the State of New York and evidence of eligibility for acceptance in a graduate program (completion of which will qualify the applicant for a New York State public librarian's certificate).

NOTE:
Term of appointment may not exceed 3 1/2 years, during which the incumbent is required to obtain the Master's Degree in an approved graduate program. The appointment may be terminated if the trainee does not show ability to develop skills in the performance of professional library tasks or adaptability for the work (See Evaluation Procedures).

SALARY: $42,830-$49,859 (based on number of credits towards a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science.)
