To help people who are struggling to pay their rent, the New York State government has established an emergency rental assistance program. Tenants can receive a one-time rental subsidy, paid directly to landlords and housing providers. Those receiving assistance will not have to pay the money back.
To be eligible for this relief, you must meet the following criteria:
- Before March 1, 2020 and at the time of application, household income must have been below 80% of the area median income, adjusted for household size.
- Before March 1, 2020 and at the time of application, the household must have been paying more than 30% of gross monthly income towards rent. This includes wages as well as any cash grants, child support, social security and/or unemployment benefits.
- Applicants must have lost money between April 1, 2020 and July 31, 2020.
To apply for rent assistance, go to the Homes and Community Renewal website.
For rent payment questions and related issues, the Homes and Community Renewal department can be reached Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 7 PM at 1-833-499-0318. Their email address is covidrentalrelief@hcr.ny.gov.
