The UN General Assembly designated June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day represents one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations. Elder abuse is a global issue that affects millions. According to the UN, it is defined as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person.”
In New York, there is a Coalition on Elder Abuse. This is a multidisciplinary, statewide network of individuals, organizations, and government agencies working together to protect older adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. On their website, there are resources available about elder abuse.
