Professor Mary Dillard, a leading scholar of African History and Women’s History at Sarah Lawrence College, will talk about what we learn from history, the part history plays in the formation of identity and culture, the collective conceptualization of events, and the significance of learning and reflecting on the past. The interview/discussion will be led by the Commission’s executive director, Mark Fang. Dillard and Fang will discuss their vision to create a “Museum of Community Action” in Westchester County.

This program is presented by the City of Yonkers Commission on Human Rights.

 

Professor Dillard, a professor at Sarah Lawrence college, brings a fresh and innovative approach to the study of history, such as in her Spring 2024 semester course:“The Power of Place: Museums, Monuments,and Public History in Yonkers.” She earned a B.A. in History from Stanford University,and a PhD in History from the University of California Los Angeles. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholar to Ghana, where she developed a focus on West African social history. Mark Fang is the executive director of the City of Yonkers Commission on Human Rights.
