626 - Disney Stitch Day

Aloha! June 26, or 6/26, is Stitch Day. Stitch, the loveable, trouble-causing blue alien from the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch, is also known as Experiment 626 (pronounced as Six-Two-Six). 626 Day, on June 26 each year, not only celebrates Stitch, but the idea of “ohana”, or family, in Hawaiian.

One of the major themes of the Lilo and Stitch movie is ohana. Stitch is an alien who crash landed on Earth alone. He forms a family with Lilo and her sister Nani. One of the movie’s famous lines is “Ohana means family. And family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.” Ohana can be the family you are born into, but it can also be the family you find and choose to make your own through friends and other loved ones.

At Yonkers Public Library, we’re getting into the 626 spirit with Stitch themed programs! At Crestwood Library, we’re having an afternoon full of fun activities with a Summer Reading Stitch Party. You can check out a teaser video here on YouTube. We’ll also be hosting two sessions of a Paint and Sip with Say, one at 2:00 PM and one at 4:00 PM. Registration is required so go to our calendar to register now!

You can also check out the Lilo & Stitch Party at the Will Library where you can make a Stitch themed craft and watch the original animated movie.
