National Library Week 1963

As part of a National Library Week celebration, 1010 Wins broadcaster Stan Z. Burns came to the Grinton I. Will Library (then known as the Grassy Sprain Library) on April 21, 1963, to broadcast a live show. The program was held in the children’s department and there was an audience of children to witness it.

Mr. Burns had a forty-year career with 1010 WINS before passing away in 1990. He covered events, such as the New York City blackout and transit strikes. Most notably, he introduced listeners to The Beatles when he played their first record on air in 1963.

On the Yonkers Public Library digital archive, there are vintage photographs of Burns’ program. There are photographs of other National Library Week programs from the 1960s that you can see there.

Michael Walsh is an Adult Service Librarian that works at the Will Library. He is currently reading Spearhead by Adam Makos.
