Podcast Review: The Daily

The Daily is an informative news podcast. It is hosted by Michael Barbaro and Sabrina Tavernise and powered by the New York Times journalism. Each weekday, there is an episode about emerging news stories. So far this week, there have been episodes about Americans returning to their jobs after the pandemic, the U.S. sending cluster munitions to Ukraine, and the introduction of Threads by Meta. The Daily is an excellent way of listening to news on the go.

Today’s episode is titled “The Great Resignation is Over.” The ‘Great Resignation’ refers to employees' reluctance to return to the same jobs following the pandemic. During the pandemic, employees, especially in the hospitality industry, worked in hazardous working conditions for low pay. After leaving these jobs, they sought stable and better paying jobs. While listeners may have heard of the “Great Resignation’, it is interesting to learn the details on why it occurred.

Tuesday’s episode is about the United States’ decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine. Cluster bombs are banned from use by 100 countries due to civilian casualties that result from them. They cover a massive area with shrapnel and not all the explosives in the bomb explode upon impact. These ‘unexploded’ parts of the bomb explode when civilians try to move them. It is enlightening to learn about these explosives and the United States’ reasoning behind sending them to Ukraine

Another interesting episode is about the launching of Threads by Meta. Threads is a social media platform that is similar to Twitter. Its similarities have outraged Twitter executive board member Elon Musk and he has threatened to sue Meta. The instability of Twitter over the last few months may cause its users to abandon it in favor of Threads, which has already been downloaded thirty million times. This is a fascinating look at competing social media companies.

The Daily is an educational and interesting podcast. Experts are frequently interviewed and they provide insight into what is being discussed. The Daily is a great travel companion to those who enjoy reading newspapers.
