International Read to Me Day 2024

Reading to children is critical from the earliest stages of development. It supports cognitive development, improves their language development and prepares them for academic success. It’s never too early to start reading to a child in your life.

March 19 is International Read to Me Day, an international campaign to advocate for children’s literacy and build a community of support to empower children with the gift of reading. One of the aims of the campaign is to “promote, encourage and inspire reading activities within communities.”

Yonkers Public Library provides the public with many opportunities for all ages to enjoy reading. We want to foster a lifelong love of reading from our oldest to our youngest readers. Our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages parents to read 1000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Children can also read to Cooper the Therapy Dog at all of our branches. We also have a wide variety of storytime for children of all ages:
